Abstract

Abstract As the result of COVID-19 pandemic, religious events which draw crowds such as funeral service needs to be restricted and monitored. Disposal and management of dead bodies is a very important mitigation step when dealing with an infectious disease. Religious customs of funeral services have to be considered when dealing with corpse management, because the freedom of expression, assembly and religion are now being directly contrasted with COVID-19 containment efforts. In this critical review of national pandemic management strategy, we used paternalism approach, social contract theory, extraordinary measures, and public trust to analyze conflicts arising from socio-cultural factors, especially in the religious conservative populations of Indonesia.
